Advancing African Legal Excellence Through Advocacy, Scholarship, and Unity

Nature of the Competition

The FALAS Continental Moot Court Competition is an academic simulation of proceedings before an international or regional judicial body.

The Competition aims to promote:

  • excellence in legal advocacy
  • development of legal research skills
  • understanding of international and African legal systems
  • intellectual exchange among law students across the African continent.

The Competition shall involve:

  • preparation of written memorials; and

presentation of oral arguments before panels of judges

Objectives of the Competition

The objectives of the Competition are to:

  1. Promote the development of legal advocacy and research skills among African law students.
  2. Encourage engagement with African and international legal systems.
  3. Foster intellectual cooperation among law faculties across the African continent.
  4. Promote ethical legal practice and professionalism among future African legal practitioners.

Provide a platform for the discussion and analysis of legal issues affecting the African continent.

Eligibility & Participation

Participation in the Competition shall be open to recognized law faculties and law schools located within Africa.

Each law faculty or law school may enter only one team in the Competition.

6. Eligibility of Participants

Only students pursuing their first degree in law (including an LL.B or its equivalent) shall be eligible to participate.

Participants must:

  • be enrolled at the participating institution during the Competition Year; and
  • not have obtained a prior degree in law.

The following persons shall not be eligible to participate:

  • qualified legal practitioners
  • judicial officers
  • individuals who have already obtained a first law degree.
